louis poulsen’s approach to lighting lies in a very strict and uncompromising product philosophy grounded in simplicity. all elements must serve a light-related purpose.

The concentrated light from the lc shutters color is filtered through an opalescent diffuser to ensure soft, comfortable light distribution. The softened light creates a pleasant atmosphere within the shade and ensures a gentle lighting effect on the outside, helping to illuminate and define the product’s shape when lit. The aim was to create comfortable and atmospheric lighting fixture in both private and public settings. The starting point is a flat sheet of aluminium which is worked into the bell-shaped shade. The shade pattern is cut and pressed to form two interactive layers, through which the light is emitted in a high-precision pattern. The 3 mm thick shade ensures a very solid fixture, suitable for applications ranging from children’s rooms to executive areas.

Louise Campbell was born in Copenhagen in 1970. Being the daughter of a Danish father and an English mother, she grew up and was educated in both countries. After graduating from the London College of Furniture in 1992, she returned to Denmark and continued her studies in Industrial Design at Denmark’s Design School, graduating in 1995. She set up her own studio in 1996, from where she has worked independently since. Her main focus is on furniture and lighting design, but the studio is increasingly involved in product and interior design projects as well.

Campbell’s work is playful, experimental and is increasingly gaining a reputation for gently twisting not only objects and situations, but also materials and maneuvering manufacturing processes in new directions. The combination of Scandinavian rationalism and femininity, and perhaps her dual nationality, give the works of Louise Campbell an unusual edge. Contrast is a recurring element in her work.

Campbell’s studio is also known for its interest in less commercial activities. Apart from being the curator and designer of exhibitions, Louise Campbell has taken part in numerous activities aimed at improving the design environment in Denmark. Among these initiatives are ‘Walk the Plank’, a seven year collaboration between thirty furniture designers and sixty cabinet makers, all of whom donated their time and original design for a truly fine cause.

There are a few ground rules the studio aims to abide by: always start from scratch, everything is possible until the opposite has been proven, there must be a good reason for every decision made.

Among many awards, Louise Campbell also won the gold IF Product Design Award for the “Campbell Pendant” in 2005, which she designed specifically for Louis Poulsen.
