involving the participation of visual artists over an extended period of time, and culminating in a final exhibition at the end of the series, “vignettes” explores the application of the artist’s subject matter onto new materials and the possibilities of super-scaling and fragmentation. by developing a work of art, artists will inspire the creation of new design product and make architectural space as a backdrop for unique lifestyle experiences.
an artists’ original image will be fragmented and/or reinterpreted in different scales and media including tiles, wallpaper, and textiles. this work may be transferred onto architecture by surfacing walls, floors, ceilings, furniture, and/or objects.
product and commissioned art installations made with these bespoke elements will be available for purchase.
our first guest artist is nina surel. we invite you to join us for a special night showcasing nina’s “vignette” with her commissioned piece “mirror of venus” (2016) and its related architectural surfaces and design objects.

nina surel, an argentinian born-miami-based visual artist is known for her mixed media portrait-landscapes that offer provocative and deep portrayals of women.
for glottman alive’s “vignettes” first project, surel experiments with a medium that is new to her. In the process, she introduces a new landscape – the florida everglades – and new creatures –the swamp’s reptiles and insects.
the commissioned piece “mirror of venus” (2016) by nina surel, is a large-scale tapestry produced in the workshop of moooi carpets in germany and will be unveiled on march 2, 2017. moooi carpets is exclusively represented by glottman in miami.

through the magnificent printed rug, which can be hung on the wall or placed on the floor, surel continues to investigate different emotions through sensual images. accustomed to working with a wide range of media – photographs, lace, buttons, porcelain, jewelry and resin on wood – she discovers in moooi carpets a surprising new medium that exceeds all expectations and pushes her to explore new boundaries.
according to surel, “mirror of venus” explores the dialogue between the inner and outer self, the surfacing and layering of the human psyche. from this perspective, it is relevant to look at her work in the context of surfacing materials and how they can affect spaces in an autobiographical, theatrical and artistic manner – creating a truly unique experience for the person who chooses to bring them into their own personal space.
this monumental work will be shown alongside a series of ekphrastic textiles, tiles, wallpaper and objects designed by nina surel, curated by oscar glottman and produced by glottman’s exclusive manufacturers.
oscar glottman began working as an architect in miami over 30 years ago. from the beginning, he had a multidisciplinary approach, merging industrial design, interior design, art, music, philosophy, sociology and psychology to his practice. with time, he developed a unique vision – one that allowed him to be a curator, an “editor of life.” working on “designing design” led him to open a studio in wynwood and, more recently, a second space in mimo.
the glottman showrooms feature products by international companies as well as uniquely designed objects. these include furniture, lighting, wall finishes, and textiles. over the years, oscar has worked with artists, designers, architects, and intellectuals to develop new designs and living strategies.
